about

Leif Solem: vox, guitar
Jason Voegele: drums, vox
Paul Lee: bass guitar, violin

This is the first record, recorded in Pennsylvania, 2oo4. I have regrets about the how of this one but that is a whole nother story. No wait I can tell it briefly: I am a firm believer in playing the songs together as a band rather than one person getting recorded and the rest of the ensemble coming back later to fill in parts. Which is what we did in the case of Apunkalypso, and I can hear it. And yes that is pretty silly coming from someone who 'plays with himself' but my point is I wish we had just done it live as a set. Rubysound, is the recording studio, and Tarek Elzaneiny our friend and engineer. He had to put up with just me one weekend to do the vocals. I remember we went to get food at a drive-thru and I ordered something and Tarek laughed and said, You know that comes with a toy? I kept the little plastic phone I got because, funny.
The demo of Sputnik Woofer is just Jason and me in his apartment in Big Red, a famous building in Pratt mythology, cattycorner from Pratt Beach. Pedro's was the best. Down Under Manhattan Bridge Underpass, and they fed us was part of the deal, it was awesome. Only thing is I wanted us to be called the BQEvils, right? Nayed! by the rhythm section. Then one fine summer night in the bar across the street from Pedro's a goddess bartender was dancing on the bar with a broomstick to airguitar I asked her if she was in a band she said yes, the BQEasies!
It could have been fate right there but no, my stupid bandmates ruined it all.
Now to be fair Paul Lee taught me more about the guitar by accident than anobody else ever did at all, so there's that. Now he's a professor, so, not stupid.
Nick Bouf was my first classmate I met in Taiwan. First class of the year, Southeast Asian history, first question is Who here is new to this school? and I raised my hand expecting not to be the only one but I was and the kid beside me in the back row busted out laughing and that was Nick. Amazingly charismatic personality, the kind you want to be friends with, who suffers no fools and is obnoxious and opinionated (he is French), who will show by doing how to go about having fun. Got me high for my first time out back of CBs. He and Jason and I were in a band in high school Nick named the Waevurs. That's how you say "Whatever" when you're really drunk. He and Jason are painters. You see what I have to put up with. Nick had the idea of the song with no beginning. Start halfway through. In medias res, right? That had a big impact on my structural ideas of song and what a song meant and could mean. They both taught me about how to make lyrics, not meaning to but they did, and Jason taught me to revere Johnny Cash.
I was a mission in high school about Lou Reed and Lightnin' Hopkins. I didn't tell everyone, but damn near. Nick made singing in French sound cool.
Paul Lee mentioned Lightnin' Hopkins the morning we met first day in college in an empty earlymorning cafeteria breakfasting before taking the music exam we both knew we would pass, the one that lets you out of freshman basics. There he was all handsome and put-together and whatnot, I asked if I could join him for breakfast and so began all this. I am lucky indeed to have met Doctor Lee. Seriously hotshit lead guitarist if you can ever coax him into playing. Try Buddy Guy "Hear Her Call My Name" . .
